Free Screen Reader For Mac

NVDA version 2021.2

The NVDA screen reader can be downloaded free of charge by anyone. We do this because we believe everyone, especially the world’s poorest blind people deserve access to computers and a way out of poverty. If you have the means, no matter how big or small, please consider making a donation before downloading NVDA. We rely on donations and grants to continue improving NVDA and to ensure it remains compatible with the world’s rapidly changing technology.

Please note: NVDA is only available for PCs running Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 and later. If you require a version of NVDA that can still run on Windows XP or Vista, please download the much older NVDA 2017.3 for Windows XP instead. NV Access does not however recommend or support running this older version on newer Operating systems.

Donation Options

Also available on iOS, VoiceOver is Apple’s free screen-reading solution made for Mac OS X, and it’s probably one of the best on this list. In addition to having very deep, OS-level integration, VoiceOver also has features like braille support and functions tailored specifically to Mac hardware like a “Rotor” function mapped to the touchpad and gestures. NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free “screen reader” which enables blind and vision impaired people to independently use the Windows Operating system. It reads the text on the screen in a computerised voice. You can control what is read to you by moving the cursor to the relevant area of text with a mouse or the arrows on your keyboard. This is a paid-for screen reader but you can download a JAWS trial which will run for 40 minutes. NVDA for Windows. NVDA (Non Visual Desktop Access) is a free, open source screen reader for Windows computers. It is the second most used desktop screen reader and, like Jaws, also works well with all popular browsers.

If you wish to donate, you can make a secure payment by credit card or by PayPal account. Amounts are in Australian dollars (AUD). Australian donations over $2.00 are tax-deductible.

Free Screen Reader For Mac Computers

Technology Is The Key

Technology opens up so many doors. But for those of us without sight, computers don’t work straight out of the box. Software called a “screen reader” is needed to translate visual information verbally, so we can make sense of what is on screen.

The Issue

Unfortunately many screen readers cost thousands of dollars — often more than the computer itself. This holds millions of people back from affording to use a computer and discovering their potential.

A Free Solution

We have spent the last 12 years developing the global solution: a free, high quality screen reader, accessible to all! We have already enabled 100,000+ people to gain freedom, education and employment!
